Who this procedure suits

Temporary residence suits entrepreneurs, investors and financially independent people who want to make real use of El Salvador's rare combination: territorial taxation, the US dollar as legal tender since 2001, no CRS and no CARF reporting, and a distinctly crypto-friendly environment. Eligibility depends on your nationality, and we check it before you order. To get in, El Salvador offers two main routes: Rentista, based on proven passive income from abroad (in practice the threshold is pegged to the local minimum wage, at roughly four times that figure), and Investor, through a qualifying investment in a business or property. Which route fits your situation, we clarify before anything is ordered. One point for honest expectations: El Salvador has become flexible since the 90-day reform, but it remains a country where you actually spend time, as Plan A or a winter base, not as a residence to park. The full picture is on the El Salvador country page.

And who it does not suit:

  • ✕You want a low-presence residence to park: since Decreto 531, temporary residence requires at least 90 days per year in the country, or the status may be annulled. For a pure backup, Panama or Paraguay are the better choices.
  • ✕You want to live on a local salary: the work permit is part of the package, but local wages are low. Life in El Salvador is funded by income from abroad, not by a local job.
  • ✕You need long-established institutions and maximum political stability as a baseline: the security turnaround is real but young, and it rests on a state of emergency and a power structure built heavily around one person.

Requirements

The core of the application is a solid ground for residence: on the Rentista route, regular passive income from abroad whose required level is pegged to the local minimum wage (in practice roughly four times that; we check the current figure before you apply rather than repeating an old number), and on the Investor route, a qualifying investment in a business or property. The price sheet of our local partners, licensed attorneys in El Salvador, lists temporary residence including a work permit, so you get both in one procedure. On top of that come the usual formalities of the region: expect apostilled documents with certified Spanish translations. We put together the specific document list for your case before you obtain anything.

Thinking about a retiree visa, but no pension that moves with you?

Retiree routes require a documented monthly income. For the self-employed and business owners we build a structure for exactly that: the pension plan LLC, your own US company that you fund with a loan and that repays it to you in regular monthly instalments under a documented pension plan. It works for many retiree visas, with no minimum age; we confirm acceptance for your destination before you order.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Settle the route and requirements

We review your situation and decide whether your application runs through Rentista or Investor, including the current thresholds, before any costs arise.

  2. 2

    Prepare your documents

Proof of income or investment, civil documents, apostilles and certified translations: we review everything before anything is filed.

  3. 3

    Filing in El Salvador

Our local partners, licensed attorneys in El Salvador, file the application and represent you in the procedure; we combine any in-person appointments with your travel plans.

  4. 4

    Processing and approval

The authority reviews the file, the local attorneys follow up, and we keep you updated in English until residence and work permit are approved.

  5. 5

Live the status and stay on course

From now on the 90-day presence per year counts; we track your deadlines for the renewal and for permanent residence after three years.

How long it takes

A reliable processing time in El Salvador depends heavily on the authority and how complete your documents are; we give you the current figure from our experience before you order rather than repeating a number from outdated guides. There is no guaranteed date, and anyone who promises you one is promising something they cannot keep. The most common cause of delay is incomplete or incorrectly certified documents, which is exactly why we review everything before filing.

Do you need to be there in person?

This is the question you need answered before you order: since Decreto 531, in force since 31 March 2026, temporary residence requires at least 90 calendar days per year in El Salvador, in one stretch or spread out. If the presence requirement is not met, the status may be annulled. That puts El Salvador among the leading flexible residence countries, for example as a winter base, but it remains a country for people who genuinely come. Only those naturalised through the state investor programme (the Freedom Visa, whose terms have not been officially published) avoid annual presence altogether.

Family members coming with you

Your spouse or partner and adult dependants join as separate line items in the same case: the same procedure, a separate document package for each person, with their own apostilles and translations. The effort per person is therefore similar; we handle the coordination and keep the family's status terms in sync, so you are not renewing a different family member every year. How minor children are included, we clarify for your specific case before you order.

What comes next

Temporary residence is the first stage: it is renewed until, after three years as a temporary resident, the way to permanent residence opens, which is much easier to keep. After five years of residence, temporary and permanent counted together, the regular route to naturalisation opens. What daily life feels like, from the security turnaround to the crypto scene on the Pacific coast, is covered in the El Salvador guide and in honest experiences of people who moved there.

What is not included

  • •Government fees and state charges in El Salvador
  • •Apostilles and legalisations in your home country
  • •Certified translations
  • •The proof of income or investment itself (including the investment on the Investor route)
  • •Notary costs
  • •Travel and accommodation costs
  • •International health insurance
  • •Tax advice in the destination country

Tax note

Residence is not the same as tax residence. El Salvador taxes on a territorial basis and made foreign income tax-exempt with its 2024 reform, but you only benefit once you have properly left your previous tax home. Moving to El Salvador does not, on its own, end your tax residence there; what your home country keeps taxing, including any exit tax, and whether a tax treaty helps depends on where you come from. Whether your income counts as foreign-source depends on its structure. The honest assessment is in the El Salvador pros and cons; your individual case belongs with a tax adviser.

One point of contact, from start to finish

Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.

That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.

Frequently asked questions

How much time do I need to spend in El Salvador?+

At least 90 calendar days per year, in one stretch or spread out. This has applied since Decreto 531 came into force on 31 March 2026. If you do not meet the presence requirement, you risk having your status annulled.

Which routes lead to temporary residence?+

Two main ones: Rentista, through proven passive income from abroad pegged to the local minimum wage (in practice roughly four times that), and Investor, through a qualifying investment in a business or property. Which one fits, we clarify before you order.

Why is a work permit included if I do not plan to work locally?+

The package from our local partners covers temporary residence including a work permit. Most clients live on income from abroad; the work permit keeps the option of local work open without a second procedure.

Is my foreign income tax-free in El Salvador?+

El Salvador taxes on a territorial basis, and since the 2024 reform foreign income is generally not taxed. Whether your specific income counts as foreign-source depends on its structure, and without properly leaving your home country's tax net, the territorial system does not help you.

Does El Salvador exchange account data automatically?+

No. El Salvador takes part in neither CRS nor CARF, so there is no automatic exchange of financial account information.

Is Bitcoin still legal tender there?+

No. Its status was withdrawn in early 2025 as part of an IMF agreement, and accepting it has been voluntary since then. The country remains crypto-friendly and still holds state Bitcoin reserves, while everyday life runs in US dollars.

Who handles the procedure in El Salvador?+

Licensed local attorneys we work with. We coordinate your case, review the documents and remain your personal contact, in English.

What comes after temporary residence?+

Renewal keeps the status continuous, permanent residence follows after three years as a temporary resident, and after five years of residence the regular route to naturalisation opens. We track every deadline for you.
