Why Ecuador?

A US dollar economy, the lowest costs and a 5-year tax regime for newcomers. An honest assessment.

Ecuador's strength is the combination of a US dollar economy without currency risk, the lowest cost of living in the region and a 5-year tax regime for newcomers. Honestly assessed, including the topics others leave out: security, tax and capital flows. The comparatively fast passport is a side effect, not the main reason.

  • ✓US dollar economy since 2000, no currency risk
  • ✓The lowest cost of living among our 12 countries
  • ✓5-year tax regime for newcomers: foreign income protected during that window
  • ✓Highland quality of life (Cuenca) with a large, established expat community
  • ✓Comparatively fast naturalisation (realistically around 5 years from arrival)

Presence & Status

Ecuador is Plan A, not a backup: if you hold a long-term residence visa, you count as tax resident regardless of your days of presence. On the way to permanent residency you may spend no more than 90 days abroad in total. Permanent residency at the earliest after 21 months of temporary residence.

Tax in Ecuador

Hybrid 😐: depends on the source of income

Honest and precise: Ecuador taxes tax residents on worldwide income in principle, progressive from 0% to 37%. You become tax resident from 183 days of stay, and importantly, simply holding a long-term residence visa makes you tax resident, regardless of your days of presence. That is why absence is not the lever; the regime is.

The decisive lever: since January 2024, newcomers without previous Ecuadorian tax residence can opt into a temporary tax regime and are then taxed only on Ecuadorian-source income for five years. Structured correctly, your foreign income stays tax-free during that window. Two things you need to know: Ecuador is a CRS participant, and it levies a 5% capital exit tax (ISD) on money transferred abroad (with allowances for small amounts). If you want to move capital flexibly, you have to plan for that.

Citizenship: the route to a second passport

Ecuador is one of the faster passports in the region. Naturalisation is possible after three years of permanent residence. Since permanent residency is granted after 21 months of temporary residence at the earliest, that realistically means around five years from arrival. Requirements: a language test and a test on Ecuadorian symbols and history. Dual citizenship is permitted.

Our Ecuador insider tip: Cuenca

Cuenca is the insider tip for highland quality of life: Ecuador's cultural jewel, a UNESCO World Heritage colonial city at around 2,500 m, crossed by four rivers, with eternal spring (around 20 °C all year) and the nickname Athens of Ecuador. The city has one of the largest and most established expat communities in Latin America, a modern tram (Tranvía) and an excellent, surprisingly affordable healthcare system, and it is considered much safer than the coast. Property in 2026: a two-bedroom flat rents for around USD 510 to 800 a month and sells for about USD 80,000 to 150,000; foreigners can buy with a passport, and transfer tax is around 1.5%. Guayaquil, the business and port city, is faster-paced; Quito offers capital-city infrastructure at 2,850 m; Vilcabamba is the mild valley of longevity. For a place to move to, what counts in the end is low costs in US dollars, a mild highland climate and an established community.

Banking outside Ecuador

Ecuador is a CRS participant and levies a 5% capital exit tax (ISD). Banking and your operating company belong outside Ecuador, not because of a territorial principle (Ecuador does not have one) but to keep your income clearly foreign-source, manage the ISD effect and avoid creating local substance. We build the international structure for you.

Flag theory: why bank outside the country?

Because the country is a CRS participant and you do not want to create local economic substance or a permanent establishment, banking and your operating company belong outside Latin America. We structure this for you. More about our services →

Who is Ecuador right for, and who not?

✓ A good fit for

  • ✓Anyone looking for maximum purchasing power at minimum cost in a US dollar economy
  • ✓Anyone who wants to make deliberate use of the 5-year tax regime for newcomers
  • ✓Anyone who actually lives there (presence required) and values highland quality of life

✗ Less suited to

  • ✗Anyone who wants a low-presence backup (90-day rule; then rather Paraguay)
  • ✗Anyone who wants 0% on foreign income permanently with no time limit (then Panama or Paraguay)
  • ✗Anyone who sees maximum security as a precondition (check the regional situation)
  • ✗Anyone who constantly needs to move capital flexibly (5% ISD)

Frequently asked questions about Ecuador

Is my foreign income tax-free in Ecuador?

Not automatically. Ecuador taxes worldwide income (0% to 37%). But since 2024 newcomers can opt into a 5-year regime that taxes only Ecuadorian-source income.

How much income do I need for residency?

USD 1,446 a month (3x the SBU minimum wage) for rentista, pensionado and digital nomad; USD 48,200 for the investor option (2026 figures, SBU USD 482).

How safe is Ecuador?

Since 2023/2024 there has been a serious security crisis; the situation varies greatly by region. The highlands around Cuenca are considered much safer than parts of the coast. Check the current situation specifically.

Is there a capital exit tax?

Yes, a 5% ISD on money transferred abroad (with an allowance). It belongs in your planning.

Does Ecuador work as a pure backup?

Not really. The residence visa alone makes you tax resident, and the 90-day rule requires real presence. For a low-presence backup, Paraguay is better.
