Why Panama?
The gold standard for US dollar security and territorial tax freedom.
Panama is the gold standard for US dollar security and territorial tax freedom. A strict territorial principle (0% on foreign income), the US dollar as official currency for more than a century, an established international banking and logistics hub around the canal and one of the lowest-presence residencies in the region make Panama one of the strongest Plan B locations in Latin America. Add political stability, a large expat community and short routes to both Americas.
- ✓Strict territorial principle: 0% tax on foreign income
- ✓US dollar as official currency: no currency risk
- ✓International banking and logistics hub (Panama Canal)
- ✓Pensionado visa: lifelong top-tier perks (discounts on healthcare, travel, daily life)
- ✓Only 1 day every 2 years of presence to keep your residency
Residence permits and residency options
USD 1,000 a month in lifelong pension (+ USD 250 per dependant) or USD 750 a month plus USD 100,000 in property. Permanent residence directly, with the best retiree perks in the world.
USD 200,000 in property or a fixed-term deposit (alternatively employment in Panama), for nationals of more than 50 countries. Since the 2021 reform: 2 years of temporary residence first, then permanent residence.
Permanent residence from day one against an investment you hold for five years. Since Decreto Ejecutivo 17/2026 the type of property decides, no longer a cut-off date: USD 300,000 for a new property bought directly from the developer, USD 500,000 for a resale property. Alternatively securities from USD 500,000 or a fixed-term deposit from USD 750,000, or from USD 500,000 at Banco Nacional or Caja de Ahorros.
Panama is a low-presence Plan B champion: in practice one visit every 2 years is enough to keep your residency. Only if you want to naturalise do you need real presence. That way Panama can be kept as a backup without living there.
Tax in Panama
Panama is the gold standard: the strict territorial principle means 0% tax on all foreign income. Dividends, interest, capital gains and remote work are all tax-free, as long as the source is outside Panama.
The honest catch is not the tax but the substance: for the exemption to apply, the source of income must be genuinely foreign. Banking and your operating company therefore belong outside Panama; otherwise you risk income being reclassified as taxable in Panama.
Citizenship: the route to a second passport
Five years of permanent residence are enough to apply for naturalisation. You are tested on Spanish and on history, geography and civic rights. The process is bureaucratic and slow; Panama does not hand out its passport in passing. Honest and important: Panama officially does not recognise dual citizenship for naturalised citizens and requires a formal renunciation of your previous nationality. In practice the actual loss is often not enforced, but it is a real risk that we assess individually. The Panamanian passport opens around 150 countries visa-free or with visa on arrival, including Schengen.
Our Panama insider tip: Boquete
Boquete is the insider tip for highland quality of life in the province of Chiriquí: eternal spring at 18 to 22 °C instead of tropical heat, an established expat and retiree community, good clinics in nearby David, and coffee farms and nature all around. Comfortable flats or houses cost around USD 1,200 to 2,000 a month. If you prefer something different: Panama City offers full capital-city infrastructure, international banking and the airport hub; Bocas del Toro relaxed Caribbean island life; the Pacific beach corridor around Coronado and the mountain town of El Valle de Antón are close to the capital. For a Plan B location, what counts in the end is US dollar stability, a minimal presence requirement and easy access.
Banking outside Panama
Your banking and your operating company belong outside Panama and outside Latin America. Panama is a CRS participant, and only outside the country does your foreign income stay genuinely foreign-source, so that the territorial exemption applies. You open local accounts for daily life yourself on the ground. We build the international structure for you.
Flag theory: why bank outside the country?
For your foreign income to stay genuinely foreign-source and the territorial exemption to apply, banking and company formation have to take place outside Latin America. We structure this for you. More about our services →

Frequently asked questions about Panama
Is my foreign income really tax-free in Panama?
Yes. Panama only taxes income from Panamanian sources. Dividends, interest, capital gains and remote work from abroad stay tax-free, provided the source is genuinely foreign.
Do I get permanent residency straight away with the Friendly Nations Visa?
No, not since the 2021 reform. You first receive 2 years of temporary residence and then convert to permanent residence.
Does the USD 300,000 threshold still apply to the Qualified Investor?
Yes, for a new property that you buy as first purchaser directly from the developer. Decreto Ejecutivo 17/2026 replaced the earlier cut-off date of 15 October 2026: for a resale property USD 500,000 applies, whenever you buy. In return you get permanent residence from day one, with maximum processing times of 15 working days at the Ministry of Commerce and 30 working days at the migration authority.
Can I keep my old passport?
Panama formally requires naturalised citizens to renounce their previous citizenship. In practice the loss is often not enforced, but it is a real risk that we assess individually.
How much time do I have to spend there?
To keep your residency, one visit every 2 years is enough. For naturalisation after five years, more actual presence is expected.
