Renew Your Temporary Residence in El Salvador
Your status stays continuous: we renew your temporary residence together with your work permit, in good time, until permanent residence after three years is due.
Who this procedure suits
The renewal is for you if you are already a temporary resident of El Salvador, typically having moved there or made it your Plan A, and want to carry your status without a gap into the next period. It is the bridge in the Salvadoran system: temporary residence is granted for a limited term, and only after three years as a temporary resident does the way to permanent residence open. Until then, a clean renewal on time decides whether your years count or you start again from scratch. If we handled your first application, you are automatically in the right place; if you obtained residence some other way, you can move your case to us, and we review where it stands before you order.
And who it does not suit:
- ✕You do not hold temporary residence in El Salvador yet: then your path starts with the first application including a work permit, not here.
- ✕You have clearly missed the 90-day presence in the current period: then your status may be annulled, and we assess honestly what can still be saved rather than simply filing a renewal.
- ✕You have been a temporary resident for three years or more: then permanent residence is usually the smarter next step, not another renewal. We check that before you order.
Requirements
The renewal continues what your first application established: the ground for residence must still exist (your passive income from abroad on the Rentista route, or the investment on the Investor route), the 90-day presence of the current period must be met, and your documents must be up to date. Which evidence the authority wants to see for your renewal, and within which window you must file, we check for your case before you order, instead of working from a standard list that misses your situation.
Thinking about a retiree visa, but no pension that moves with you?
Retiree routes require a documented monthly income. For the self-employed and business owners we build a structure for exactly that: the pension plan LLC, your own US company that you fund with a loan and that repays it to you in regular monthly instalments under a documented pension plan. It works for many retiree visas, with no minimum age; we confirm acceptance for your destination before you order.

Step by step
- 1
Check deadlines and presence
We establish where your status stands: expiry date, the 90-day presence met, the ground for residence still in place. Only then is anything ordered.
- 2
Update your documents
Expired evidence is renewed, apostilled and translated by a certified translator; we review everything before it goes to the authority.
- 3
Filing the renewal
Our local partners, licensed attorneys in El Salvador, file the renewal together with the work permit; we place any in-person appointments inside your 90-day window.
- 4
Processing and approval
The authority reviews the file, the local attorneys follow up, and we keep you updated in English until the new period is approved.
- 5
On course for permanent residence
We track your years as a temporary resident and get in touch as soon as permanent residence is due after three years.
How long it takes
The renewal works the same way: processing time depends on the authority and how complete your documents are, and we give you the current figure from our experience before you order rather than a number from outdated guides. What matters more than processing time is starting in good time: anyone who only thinks about renewing shortly before expiry puts their status at risk for no reason. That is what our deadline tracking is for.
Do you need to be there in person?
The 90-day rule of Decreto 531 is not a one-off: it applies in every temporary period, meaning at least 90 calendar days per year in El Salvador, in one stretch or spread out, or the status may be annulled. For the renewal, this means your travel plans and your procedure belong together. We place any in-person appointments inside the 90-day window you are planning anyway, so the renewal does not cost you an extra trip.
Family members coming with you
Dependants who moved with you renew as separate line items in the same case: their own document package, their own evidence, the same timeline. The real gain is in the synchronisation: we keep the whole family's terms running in parallel, so you are not running a different procedure every year. For minor children, we clarify the specific process before you order.
What comes next
Every clean renewal brings you closer to the real goal: after three years as a temporary resident, the way to permanent residence opens, which is much easier to keep, and after five years of residence the regular route to naturalisation. Why it is worth sticking with it, from the territorial tax system to the security turnaround, is covered in the El Salvador pros and cons and on the El Salvador country page.
What is not included
- •Government fees and state charges in El Salvador
- •Apostilles and legalisations in your home country
- •Certified translations
- •The proof of income or investment itself
- •Notary costs
- •Travel and accommodation costs
- •Tax advice in the destination country
Tax note
Residence is not the same as tax residence. The renewal secures your right to stay but does not change the basic tax question: you only benefit from El Salvador's territorial system once you have properly left your previous tax home. What your home country keeps taxing, and whether a tax treaty helps, depends on where you come from. The background is in the El Salvador guide; your individual case belongs with a tax adviser.
One point of contact, from start to finish
Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.
That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.
Frequently asked questions
When should I start on the renewal?+
Well before your current period expires. We check the exact filing window for your case; as a client you get the reminder automatically through our deadline tracking.
What happens if I did not manage the 90 days?+
Then your status may be annulled, as Decreto 531 provides. We assess your situation honestly and tell you which options remain, rather than filing a renewal that is bound to fail.
Do I have to travel in specially for the renewal?+
Because of the 90-day rule you are in the country regularly anyway. We place any in-person appointments inside that window, so the renewal does not cost you an extra trip.
Is the work permit renewed as well?+
Yes, residence and work permit run as one package, just as with the first application. You do not need a second procedure.
How many times do I need to renew before permanent residence is possible?+
The way to permanent residence opens after three years as a temporary resident. How many renewal rounds that means in your case depends on the terms of your periods, which we check before you order.
You did not handle my first application. Can you still renew?+
Yes. We take over the case, first review where your status and documents stand, and tell you honestly whether a renewal will go through cleanly.
Who handles the procedure in El Salvador?+
Licensed local attorneys. We coordinate your case, review the documents and remain your personal contact, in English.
