The Friendly Nations Visa is open to nationals of more than 50 countries; whether your nationality is on the list, we check before you order. It suits entrepreneurs and the self-employed who create their economic tie through their own Panamanian company and so get company and residence in one go, investors who build the tie through property or a fixed-term deposit, and remote workers with a solid income looking for a reliable base with first-class flight connections and banking. If the company route interests you, how we set up company and residence together is explained on our company formation page.
And who it does not suit:
At the heart of the Friendly Nations Visa is a demonstrable economic tie to Panama. Panama accepts several ways to show it: your own company in Panama, local employment or an investment (property or a fixed-term deposit). An employment contract or a property purchase is therefore not mandatory; a single viable route is enough, and we work out which one fits your situation before you order. Then come the formalities: a valid passport, a police clearance certificate with apostille and evidence of the tie you have chosen, all with certified translations. In Panama, immigration cases must be filed by a lawyer: no application goes in without licensed attorneys on the ground, which protects quality and keeps sloppy work out of the process.
We review your situation and decide which economic tie your application will rest on, before any costs arise.
Form the company, document the employment or structure the investment; in parallel your document pack comes together with apostilles and translations.
You spend a few working days in Panama; our local partners, licensed attorneys, file the application, and biometrics and registration happen in the same window.
The authority reviews the file, the attorneys on the ground follow up, and we keep you updated in English until your temporary residence is approved.
On application, temporary residence becomes permanent residence; we remind you in good time and prepare the second round.
From a complete document pack to approval, it takes a few months in our experience; temporary residence is then valid for two years. By Latin American standards Panama works quickly, but there is no guaranteed date here either. The most common cause of delay is faulty apostilles and translations, which is exactly why we check everything before it goes on the plane.
To file, you need one trip of a few working days: filing, biometrics, registration. After that, the status does not require you to live in Panama; the later conversion to permanent residence and a robust tax residence have their own requirements, which we go through with you.
Dependants can be included in the same case. What matters is filing together with the principal applicant: Panama handles dependants filed together far more smoothly than later add-on applications. Anyone who joins later starts a new procedure, so plan the trip together where you can.
After two years of temporary residence comes the application for permanent residence, which we handle as a separate procedure and whose deadline we track for you. With permanent status, Panama becomes your long-term base: US dollar banking, territorial taxation and the best flight hub in the region. For the full picture of the country, see the Panama country page and the Panama guide.
Residence is not the same as tax residence. Panama's territorial system does not tax foreign income, but you only benefit once your tax residence at home has properly ended. Moving to Panama does not, on its own, end it; what your home country keeps taxing, whether it applies an exit tax and how it treats a low-tax destination depends on where you come from. More context in the Panama guide; your individual case belongs with a tax adviser.
Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.
That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.
No, not since the 2021 reform. You first receive two years of temporary residence and then apply for permanent residence. We handle both.
No. The economic tie can be created in several ways, including through your own Panamanian company. A single viable route is enough.
Yes, the company route still qualifies for two years of temporary residence. We set up the company and the residence application together so that both fit.
A few working days to file: filing, biometrics, registration. The status has no permanent presence requirement.
Yes, they are best included in the same case. Filing together is much smoother than adding them later.
Licensed attorneys on the ground, our local partners of many years; in Panama immigration cases must be filed by a lawyer anyway. We coordinate your case and remain your personal contact, in English.
For many setups it makes sense, and opening one can be handled as part of your residence case. Accounts outside your country of residence are a topic of their own; see our page on bank accounts.
You convert temporary residence into permanent residence. We track the deadline and prepare the second round in good time so that no status lapses.
A fixed price, three ways to pay, and once your payment arrives our team first checks your requirements before your case goes to our local partners.
