Renew Your Temporary Residence in Paraguay
Your status carries on instead of lapsing: keep every deadline, avoid setbacks in the procedure and head cleanly towards permanent residence.
Who this procedure suits
The renewal is for you if your temporary residence in Paraguay is approaching its expiry date and the conversion to permanent residence is not yet due, for example because the roughly two years are not complete or your documents do not yet support the conversion. It suits people who have moved, or are building a Plan B, and who do not want to risk their status over a missed deadline: every stage of the Paraguayan system has its own deadlines, and missing one puts you at risk of a setback in the procedure. Whether the renewal or already permanent residence is the right application for you, we check before you order.
And who it does not suit:
- ✕Your roughly two years are complete and your documents support the conversion: then permanent residence is the right application, not the renewal. We tell you so openly, before any costs arise.
- ✕You do not hold Paraguayan residence yet: then your path starts with temporary residence. This service assumes a temporary status that is still running.
- ✕Your status has already expired: that is no longer a standard case. Get in touch anyway, but the solution is assessed individually, not promised across the board.
Requirements
The basis is a current temporary residence, obtained through our temporary residence service or otherwise, and compliance with the presence rules of the temporary phase, meaning at least one entry per year. Which documents the Dirección General de Migraciones currently asks for at renewal, and which of your documents have expired in the meantime and need replacing, is checked for your case before the application. The requirements have shifted several times in recent years, and outdated guides are the most common source of mistakes here.
What we take care of
- ✓Deadline check: when your status expires and whether renewal or conversion is the right step
- ✓A check that your presence and your documents support the renewal, before anything is ordered
- ✓A current document list for your case instead of outdated guides, including an apostille and translation roadmap for renewals
- ✓Preparation and review of every document before filing
- ✓Filing with the Dirección General de Migraciones by licensed local attorneys
- ✓Ongoing follow-up with the authority until the decision
- ✓Deadline tracking for the later conversion to permanent residence
- ✓One personal contact who coordinates the whole procedure in English
Step by step
- 1
Deadline and status check
We establish when your status expires and whether the renewal or already the conversion to permanent residence is the right application.
- 2
Update your documents
Expired evidence is renewed, apostilled and translated by a certified translator; the current list of requirements comes from reviewing your case, not from outdated guides.
- 3
Filing
Our local partners, licensed attorneys in Paraguay, file the renewal with the Dirección General de Migraciones; we schedule any in-person appointments around the entry you have to make anyway.
- 4
Processing and follow-up
The authority reviews the file, we follow up and keep you updated in English until the decision arrives.
- 5
Setting the course for permanent residence
Once your status is renewed, we track the deadline for the conversion so you do not miss the second stage.
How long it takes
There is no reliable standard duration for the renewal; it depends on the authority's workload and on how complete your documents are. What matters more is something else: start in good time, so your status does not expire while the application is being processed. That is exactly what our deadline tracking is for. We will not give you a guaranteed date, but we will give you a process that avoids rounds of follow-up requests.
Do you need to be there in person?
Temporary residence already requires at least one entry per year. Whether the renewal itself involves in-person appointments, and which ones, is checked for your case before the application and combined with your travel plans. Keep in mind: for the later conversion to permanent residence, the authority wants to see a genuine tie to the country, and doing the bare minimum in this phase is the riskiest strategy.
Family members coming with you
Every family member on your case holds their own status with its own term and is renewed individually, with their own document package. We track the deadlines of the whole family together and time the renewals so that the terms stay in sync and you are not running a procedure for a different family member every year.
What comes next
The renewal is not an end in itself but the bridge: the goal remains the conversion to permanent residence, which only needs one entry roughly every three years, and after that the option of naturalisation after three years of permanent residence. How the stages fit together is explained in the Paraguay residency guide.
What is not included
- •Government fees in Paraguay
- •Apostilles and legalisations in your home country
- •Certified translations
- •Notary costs
- •Travel and accommodation costs
- •Renewing the evidence itself (police certificate, proof of income or assets)
- •Tax advice in the destination country
Tax note
Residence is not the same as tax residence. The renewal secures your right to stay but does not change your tax position: Paraguay's territorial exemption for foreign income only works with a clean tax set-up and a genuine move. Moving to Paraguay does not, on its own, end your tax residence at home; what your home country keeps taxing depends on where you come from. The basics are in Living tax-free in Paraguay.
One point of contact, from start to finish
Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.
That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.
Frequently asked questions
Should I renew or convert straight to permanent residence?+
That is exactly what we check first. If the roughly two years are complete and your documents support the conversion, permanent residence is the right application; if not, the renewal keeps your status alive.
What happens if I miss the deadline?+
Every stage of the Paraguayan system has its own deadlines, and missing one puts you at risk of a setback in the procedure, in the worst case a fresh start. That is why we track your deadlines and start in good time.
Do I have to travel to Paraguay for the renewal?+
At least one entry per year is part of the temporary phase anyway. Whether the renewal itself requires additional in-person appointments, we check for your case and combine them with your travel plans.
Which documents do I need?+
That depends on the authority's current requirements and on which of your documents have expired in the meantime. We check this for your case before the application instead of copying lists from outdated guides.
How does this work for my family?+
Each family member on your case renews their own status with their own document package. We coordinate the procedures so that the family's terms stay in sync.
Does the renewal change anything about my taxes?+
No. It secures your right to stay, not your tax status. Paraguay's territorial exemption for foreign income is a separate step with its own set-up, and leaving your home country's tax net properly depends on where you come from.
