Renewing Your Temporary Residence in Ecuador
Your status carries on instead of lapsing: meet the deadlines, keep the 90-day rule in view and head cleanly towards permanent residence.
Who this procedure suits
A renewal is for you if your temporary residence in Ecuador is approaching its expiry date and switching to permanent residence is not yet the right step, for example because the 21-month window does not fit the timing or your documents cannot yet support the switch. It suits people who have moved, and Plan B strategists alike, who do not want to risk their status over a missed deadline: temporary residence is initially valid for about two years, and in our experience the authorities' requirements in Ecuador change often, so outdated guides are the most common source of mistakes. Whether a renewal or already permanent residence is the right application for you, we check before you order.
And who it does not suit:
- ✕Your 21 months are complete and your documents support the switch: then permanent residence is the right application, not a renewal. We tell you so openly before any costs arise.
- ✕You do not have Ecuadorian residence yet: your path starts with temporary residence; this product requires an existing status.
- ✕Your status has already expired or you have broken the 90-day rule: that is no longer a standard case. Get in touch anyway, but the solution is assessed individually, not promised across the board.
Requirements
The basis is an existing temporary residence, whether obtained through us or elsewhere, and compliance with the presence rules of the temporary phase, meaning no more than 90 days' absence in total across the whole temporary residence. Whether your status can be renewed, which documents the authority currently requires, and which of your documents have expired in the meantime and need to be renewed is checked for your case before you apply: Ecuador's rules change often, and on the investor route the investment must also have been maintained throughout the temporary phase.
What we take care of
- ✓Deadline check: when your status expires and whether a renewal or the switch is the right step
- ✓Checking whether your presence (90-day rule) and your documents support the renewal before anything is ordered
- ✓An up-to-date document list for your case instead of old guides, including an apostille and translation plan for renewed documents
- ✓Preparing and pre-checking every document before submission
- ✓Submission and representation by licensed local attorneys
- ✓Coordinating any in-person appointments with your travel plans
- ✓Ongoing follow-up with the authority until the decision
- ✓Deadline tracking for the subsequent switch to permanent residence
- ✓One personal contact coordinating everything in English throughout the process
Step by step
- 1
Deadline and status check
We clarify when your status expires, what your presence record looks like and whether a renewal or already permanent residence is the right application.
- 2
Update your documents
Expired documents are renewed, apostilled and translated by a certified translator; the current requirements come from reviewing your case, not from old guides.
- 3
Submission
Together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, the renewal is submitted; we schedule any in-person appointments around your travel plans.
- 4
Processing and follow-up
The authority reviews your case, we follow up and keep you updated in English until the decision arrives.
- 5
Setting course for permanent residence
With your status secured, we track your 21-month window and your days of presence so you do not miss the switch.
How long it takes
There is no reliable blanket timeframe for a renewal; it depends on the authority's workload and how complete your documents are. What matters more is something else: start in good time, so your status does not expire while the application is being processed. That is exactly what our deadline tracking is for. We do not give you a guaranteed date, but we do give you a process that avoids rounds of requests for more documents.
Do you need to be there in person?
The temporary phase has its own rule anyway: no more than 90 days' absence in total across the whole temporary residence, or your path to permanent residence stalls. Whether the renewal itself requires additional in-person appointments is checked for your case before you apply and scheduled around your travel plans. And as a reminder: as the holder of a long-term residence visa you are tax resident in Ecuador anyway, and keeping your presence to the minimum does not change that.
Family members coming with you
Each family member has their own status with its own term and their own presence record and is renewed as a separate line item with their own document pack. We track the whole family's deadlines together and arrange the procedures so the terms stay in step and you can make the later switch together.
What comes next
A renewal is not an end in itself but a bridge: the goal remains permanent residence in Ecuador, which opens at the earliest after 21 months of temporary residence, followed by the option of naturalisation after three years of permanent residence, realistically about five years after arrival. How the stages fit together is explained in our guide to residence in Ecuador.
What is not included
- •Government fees and state charges in Ecuador
- •Apostilles and legalisations in your home country
- •Certified translations
- •Notary costs
- •Travel and accommodation costs
- •Renewing the evidence itself (police clearance, proof of income or investment)
- •Tax advice in the destination country
Tax note
Residence is not the same as tax residence, and a renewal does not change your tax status: in Ecuador, as the holder of a long-term residence visa, you are tax resident anyway, regardless of how many days you spend there. If you use the five-year tax regime for newcomers, keep an eye on how much of that window remains when you renew. For context, see our comparison of tax holidays in Uruguay, Chile and Ecuador; your individual case belongs with a tax adviser.
One point of contact, from start to finish
Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.
That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.
Frequently asked questions
Should I renew or apply for permanent residence straight away?+
That is exactly what we check first. Permanent residence opens at the earliest after 21 months of temporary residence; if your window and your documents are ready, the switch is the right application, otherwise a renewal keeps your status alive.
What happens if I have broken the 90-day rule?+
Then it is no longer a standard case: too much absence during the temporary phase puts the path to permanent residence at risk. Get in touch anyway; we assess individually what can be saved, but we make no blanket promises.
Do I have to travel to Ecuador for the renewal?+
The temporary phase requires real presence anyway. Whether the renewal itself needs additional in-person appointments, we check for your case and schedule them around your travel plans.
Which documents do I need?+
That depends on the authority's current requirements and on which of your documents have expired in the meantime. Ecuador's rules change often; we check this before you apply instead of copying lists from old guides.
I came in on the investor route: what applies to my investment?+
The investment must be maintained throughout the temporary residence phase. Before the renewal we check that your proof of it is up to date.
How does it work for my family?+
Each family member renews their own status as a separate line item with their own document pack. We coordinate the procedures so the family's terms stay in step.
