Who this procedure suits

Permanent residence is the second stage of the Argentine system. It fits you if your temporary residence in Argentina is already running or approaching the conversion point after two years. Eligibility depends on your nationality, and we check it before you order. It suits everyone who has chosen Argentina as their real centre of life and now wants to make that status permanent: owners of vineyards and land, retirees in Mendoza or Bariloche, families settled into the international schools of Buenos Aires. And it is the foundation for anyone who wants to keep naturalisation under Argentine law open as an option.

And who it does not suit:

  • ✕You do not yet hold temporary residence in Argentina: your path starts at the first stage, temporary residence, not here.
  • ✕You want a status to park: since the 2025 reform, permanent residence also lapses after more than twelve months of continuous absence. For a low-presence backup, Paraguay or Panama are the better choices.
  • ✕You expect permanent residence to come with tax freedom: anyone who holds permanent residence or spends around twelve months in the country is generally treated as tax resident, with tax on worldwide income and a wealth tax.

Requirements

The standard route runs through two years of temporary residence during which you kept to the presence rules: temporary residence is at risk once you have been away for more than six months. That is the first thing we check, because a patchy presence record is the most common reason conversions fail. On top of that come the formalities, which the procedure has scrutinised more strictly since the migration reform: a valid passport and DNI, updated police certificates, proof of income and health insurance, and certified translations wherever foreign documents are involved. Which evidence the authority will want to see in your specific case is checked for you before you apply, not copied from old guides. The application is filed digitally through the government platform, also from within the country, and the procedure is run together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country.

Thinking about a retiree visa, but no pension that moves with you?

Retiree routes require a documented monthly income. For the self-employed and business owners we build a structure for exactly that: the pension plan LLC, your own US company that you fund with a loan and that repays it to you in regular monthly instalments under a documented pension plan. It works for many retiree visas, with no minimum age; we confirm acceptance for your destination before you order.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Pre-check of your record

We review the presence, status and documents from your temporary phase and tell you honestly whether the conversion holds up now or what needs fixing first.

  2. 2

    Update your documents

Police certificates, proof of income and insurance are updated, translated and reviewed by us before anything goes to the authority.

  3. 3

    File the application

Our local partners, licensed attorneys in Argentina, file the conversion application digitally with the migration authority and represent you in the procedure.

  4. 4

    Processing and resolution

The authority reviews, the attorneys on the ground follow up, and we keep you informed in English until the resolution and permanent residence certificate are issued.

  5. 5

    DNI, social security and completion

Once approved, your new DNI is applied for and your social security registration is completed; from then on we track the deadlines for your permanent status.

How long it takes

Allow several months from filing to resolution; since the 2025 migration reform, processing times of 90 days and more are common, and the checks have become stricter. There is no guaranteed date. The best accelerator is a clean temporary phase: a complete presence record, full and current documents, and no rounds of requests for more evidence.

Do you need to be there in person?

You need to be in the country for the application steps, which is no problem for the people this product is for: anyone who has spent two years on temporary residence without long absences already lives in Argentina. After that, things get noticeably more relaxed, but not open-ended: permanent residence lapses after more than twelve months of continuous absence (before the reform it was 24). Permanent residence is not a park-and-forget status either; our deadline tracking keeps an eye on that limit for you.

Family members coming with you

Your spouse or partner and adult dependants are filed together with your application and go through the conversion as separate applications within the same case, each with their own updated set of documents. We handle the coordination so that the whole family's timelines stay in step.

What comes next

With permanent residence your status is indefinite: no more annual renewals, full everyday life with a DNI and social security, and the restrictions that have applied to temporary residents since the reform no longer affect you. From here, many people turn to the passport question: Argentina allows naturalisation after two years of legal residence, one of the fastest routes in the region to a strong passport, but with demanding presence requirements that make you tax resident. The honest assessment is in our article on the fastest route to a passport. For the full picture of the country, see the Argentina country page.

What is not included

  • •Government fees in Argentina
  • •Apostilles and legalisations in your home country
  • •Certified translations
  • •Private health insurance (ongoing premiums)
  • •Notary fees
  • •Travel and living costs
  • •The proof of income and assets itself
  • •Tax advice in the destination country

Tax note

Residence is not the same as tax residence, but with permanent residence the two move close together: anyone who obtains permanent residence or spends around twelve months in the country is generally treated as tax resident, and therefore taxed on worldwide income (progressive rates up to 35%) plus the wealth tax Bienes Personales on worldwide assets. If you want to manage your tax residence deliberately, plan your days and absences before you file this application, not afterwards. The background is in our Argentina guide; your individual case belongs with a tax adviser.

One point of contact, from start to finish

Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.

That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.

Frequently asked questions

When can I switch from temporary to permanent residence?+

After two years of temporary residence, provided you kept to the presence rules. We check your record before filing and track the deadline if you set up your temporary residence with us.

What happens if I broke the presence rules during the temporary phase?+

Then the conversion is at risk, because temporary residence can be lost after an absence of more than six months. That is exactly why our pre-check comes first: we tell you honestly whether your case holds up before any costs arise.

Can permanent residence lapse again?+

Yes. Since the 2025 reform it lapses after more than twelve months of continuous absence; previously the limit was 24 months. Our deadline tracking keeps an eye on that limit for you.

Does permanent residence in Argentina make me fully taxable?+

Generally yes: anyone who obtains permanent residence or spends around twelve months in the country is treated as tax resident, with tax on worldwide income at up to 35% and the Bienes Personales wealth tax. Do these sums before you decide, not afterwards.

What about my family?+

Your spouse or partner and adult dependants are filed together with your application, each with their own set of documents. We coordinate the applications so that the whole family moves into permanent status at the same time.

Does permanent residence lead to citizenship?+

It is the stable foundation for it. Argentina allows naturalisation after two years of legal residence, but requires demanding, continuous presence that makes you tax resident; the 2025 decree behind the current wording was annulled by the national electoral court on 30 June 2026 and the case is now before the Supreme Court. For people moving to Argentina as their Plan A, who live in the country anyway, it is one of the fastest passport routes in the region, and dual citizenship is recognised.

Who runs the procedure?+

We run it together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country. We coordinate your case, review the documents and remain your personal contact, in English, throughout.
