Who this procedure suits

Residence in Peru suits you if you are looking for an affordable, fast entry into Latin America: the common route through passive income from around USD 1,000 a month is one of the lowest thresholds in the region. It suits retirees and people with passive income who want to benefit from a low cost of living, anyone who values no wealth, inheritance or gift tax, and above all those building a second passport strategically: naturalisation is possible today after 2 years of legal residence, after 5 once Ley 32421 is in force. Work in the country and investment in a Peruvian company also lead to residence; which visa category your application technically uses, we clarify before filing.

And who it does not suit:

  • ✕You are looking for a zero-tax location: Peru taxes its tax residents on worldwide income. Peru's trump card is the fast passport, not the tax rate; for zero tax, Panama or Paraguay are the better choice.
  • ✕You expect maximum political stability: Peru is politically volatile. If institutional calm matters above all, Uruguay or Chile are the better fit.
  • ✕You hardly want to be there: depending on the category there are real presence conditions, residence lapses after more than 183 consecutive days' absence, and the road to the passport requires real life in the country. Peru is not a mailbox status.

Requirements

The most practical route for most people runs through regular passive income from around USD 1,000 a month from pensions, rents, dividends or investment income, paid into a Peruvian bank account; for each dependant the requirement rises by around USD 500. Alternatively, employment with a Peruvian company as sponsor (including your own company paying you a local salary) or an investment in a Peruvian company with around 5 jobs leads to residence. The file includes your passport, an apostilled police certificate, an apostilled birth certificate and proof of income, with certified translations into Spanish. Pleasantly pragmatic: if your nationality can enter Peru visa-free as a tourist, you may stay up to 183 days, and the application can be filed from inside Peru; we confirm this for your passport before you order. Which category and which evidence apply to your case is checked before filing.

Thinking about a retiree visa, but no pension that moves with you?

Retiree routes require a documented monthly income. For the self-employed and business owners we build a structure for exactly that: the pension plan LLC, your own US company that you fund with a loan and that repays it to you in regular monthly instalments under a documented pension plan. It works for many retiree visas, with no minimum age; we confirm acceptance for your destination before you order.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Clarify route and category

We review your source of income and family situation and decide which residence route your application will take, before anything is ordered.

  2. 2

    Prepare the documents

Police certificate, birth certificate, proof of income: everything is obtained according to our checklist, apostilled, given certified translations into Spanish and pre-checked.

  3. 3

    File, often from inside Peru

The attorneys on the ground file your application; if your nationality enters visa-free, you may stay up to 183 days as a tourist, and the application can be filed from inside Peru.

  4. 4

    Procedure and transition period

While the authority reviews the file, we keep you updated in English; if you need to sign on tourist status or travel abroad in the meantime, add the signing or exit permit as an item.

  5. 5

    Residence granted, clocks set

With residence status the count begins: towards permanent residence after 3 years, and towards naturalisation today after 2 years of real presence, after 5 once Ley 32421 is in force.

How long it takes

Peru is one of the quicker countries in the region: processing often takes just a few weeks in our experience, from complete filing. The honest caveat: that applies to clean files. Missing apostilles, uncertified translations or incomplete proof of income quickly cost months, which is why we check every document before the authority sees it. Nobody can honestly promise you a guaranteed date.

Do you need to be there in person?

Getting started in Peru is easy: if your nationality enters visa-free, you arrive as a tourist, may stay up to 183 days and can file from inside the country, with no consulate lead time. After that, it depends on your goal. Each category has its own presence conditions, and residence lapses if you spend more than 183 consecutive days outside Peru (Decreto Legislativo 1350, Article 33). And if you want to use the 2 years to the passport before the five years of Ley 32421 apply, you need real, continuous presence: the immigration authority checks travel stamps closely, and gaps can sink the later naturalisation application. That makes Peru the wrong address for perpetual travellers and exactly the right one for people genuinely relocating.

Family members coming with you

Dependants are included as a separate item in the same case, each with their own document pack including apostilles and certified translations; the income threshold rises by around USD 500 per dependant. An honest caveat belongs here: our local partners' price list only covers spouses and minor children of certain status holders as dependants. Whether your household fits, or whether a separate route per person is cleaner, we check before you order instead of promising an entitlement across the board.

What comes next

With residence, two clocks run at once. After 3 years, permanent residence in Peru opens up, the lasting status independent of renewals. And under current law, naturalisation is already possible after 2 years of uninterrupted legal residence, one of the fastest passport routes in the world, although its window closes once the new nationality law (Ley 32421, five years) enters into force; the mechanics are explained in our guide Peru's naturalisation window is closing. We handle both next steps as separate procedures and track the deadlines for you. For the full picture of the country, see the Peru country page.

What is not included

  • •Government fees in Peru
  • •Apostilles and legalisations in your home country
  • •Certified translations
  • •Notary fees
  • •Travel and accommodation costs
  • •The income and asset evidence itself
  • •Opening and running your Peruvian bank account
  • •Tax advice in the destination country

Tax note

Residence is not the same as tax residence. Peru taxes its tax residents on worldwide income; you become domiciled after more than 183 days of presence, but only with effect from 1 January of the following year, which creates a useful planning window. Employment income is taxed progressively at 8% to 30%, investment income at around 5%, and there is no wealth, inheritance or gift tax. Moving to Peru does not, on its own, end your tax residence at home; what your home country keeps taxing, and whether a tax treaty with Peru helps, depends on where you come from. More context in our guide Permanent residence in Peru: residencia and tax; your individual case belongs with a tax adviser.

One point of contact, from start to finish

Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.

That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.

Frequently asked questions

Can I enter as a tourist and apply for residence in Peru?+

If your nationality enters Peru visa-free, yes, that is one of Peru's practical advantages: you may stay up to 183 days, and the application can be filed from inside Peru. We confirm the entry rules for your passport before you order.

How much income do I need to show?+

The common passive income route requires around USD 1,000 a month from pensions, rents, dividends or investment income, plus around USD 500 per dependant. That is one of the lowest thresholds in the region. Whether your income structure qualifies, we check before filing.

Can I sign documents at all on tourist status?+

That is what the permit to sign documents is for, applied for through the immigration authority's online system. We offer it as an optional item in your case so that powers of attorney and applications are legally effective before your status is granted.

Can I travel abroad while my application is pending?+

That is what the exit and re-entry permit is for, covering trips abroad of up to 30 calendar days, which we apply for as an optional item. Without it you risk problems with your pending application.

How quickly will I get residence?+

In our experience often within a few weeks of complete filing; Peru is quicker here than many of its neighbours. There is still no guaranteed date, and incomplete documents are the most common brake.

Can my dependants come too?+

Dependants are included as a separate item in the same case; the income requirement rises by around USD 500 per dependant. Important: the price list only covers spouses and minor children of certain status holders as dependants, so we check your household honestly before you order.

When do I become liable to tax in Peru?+

You become tax resident after more than 183 days of presence, with effect only from 1 January of the following year. From then on, worldwide income is taxed: employment income progressively up to 30%, investment income at around 5%, no wealth tax. The transition can be planned.

Who handles my procedure in Peru?+

Licensed attorneys on the ground, our local partners. We coordinate your case, pre-check the documents and remain your personal contact, in English.
