Mexico Visitor Work Visa: Short-Term Paid Work Without Residence
For a clearly defined paid assignment in Mexico: a work permit on a visitor basis, without the machinery of a residence.
Who this procedure suits
The Visitor Work Visa is an honest niche product: it fits when you need to enter Mexico for short-term work that is paid in Mexico, a project, an engagement, a time-limited assignment, and you want neither to move nor to build up residence. Eligibility depends on your nationality, and we check it before you order. It is the lean answer to a narrow question. For anything longer-lasting it is the wrong tool: if you work in Mexico repeatedly or permanently, you belong in temporary residence with a work permit.
And who it does not suit:
- ✕You want to work in Mexico permanently or repeatedly: then the Work Visa with temporary residence is the right route, not visitor status.
- ✕You work remotely for an employer outside Mexico: you do not need a work permit for that at all, either as a tourist for up to 180 days or under Residente Temporal.
- ✕You want to collect years towards permanent residence or a passport through this status: visitor status is not residence and does not count towards the naturalisation period.
Requirements
The basis is a specific, identifiable assignment with pay from Mexico: who pays you, for what, and for which period. The formal requirements depend heavily on the type of assignment and who is behind it, and cannot honestly be listed across the board; they are checked for your case before you apply. Expect the classics: a valid passport, evidence of the engagement and a procedure that starts before you enter the country. Whether your plan falls into this category at all, or is better handled under a different status, is the very first thing we clarify, before any costs arise.
What we take care of
- ✓An honest first check of whether the Visitor Work Visa is the right status for your assignment at all
- ✓Clarifying the requirements for your specific case before you apply
- ✓A complete document list with a translation plan where needed
- ✓Preparing and pre-checking your documents
- ✓Coordination with the Mexican side of your assignment
- ✓Support through the procedure by licensed local attorneys where the procedure requires it
- ✓Coordinating appointments and your entry window
- ✓One personal contact coordinating everything in English throughout the process
Step by step
- 1
Assess the assignment
We check whether your plan falls into the visitor category or whether another status is the more honest route.
- 2
Clarify the requirements
The specific evidence for your case is clarified in advance, not copied from blanket lists.
- 3
Prepare your documents
Your pack is pre-checked before any authority sees it.
- 4
Application and appointment
The procedure starts before entry; we align appointments and your entry window with your assignment plan.
- 5
Assignment and departure
You complete your assignment with a clean status; if you need more next time, we talk about the Work Visa.
How long it takes
The timeframe depends on the type of assignment and the responsible office; there is no guaranteed date. For a niche procedure this applies all the more: build the time buffer into your planning, not your hopes. We give you a realistic range as soon as your case is outlined.
Do you need to be there in person?
The procedure starts before entry; the assignment itself naturally takes place in Mexico. A presence question in the residence sense does not arise: the status is tailored to the assignment and ends with it. That is both its strength and its limit.
Family members coming with you
The Visitor Work Visa is an individual status for your assignment: bringing family along is not part of it, and we do not artificially bolt it on. If your family travels with you privately, the normal rules for tourist stays apply to them; if the assignment turns into a move, we switch together to the residence track and its procedures for dependents.
What comes next
If the one-off assignment becomes something more, the next step is clear: temporary residence with a work permit, where your Mexican client becomes the employer in the procedure, or, if you have your own foreign income, temporary residence through proof of solvency. Unlike visitor status, both count towards permanent residence and naturalisation. For the full picture, see the Mexico country page.
What is not included
- •Government fees in Mexico and in your country of residence
- •Services provided by the Mexican client's side in the procedure
- •Apostilles and legalisations in your home country
- •Certified translations
- •Travel and accommodation costs
- •Tax advice in the destination country
Tax note
Even a short status raises tax questions. Mexico determines tax residence by your centre of vital interests, not by a 183-day mechanism; a single assignment usually does not make you resident, but pay from a Mexican source can be relevant for tax. Whether a tax treaty between your home country and Mexico applies to such cases depends on where you come from. For context, see our guide to residence permits and tax residence in Mexico; your individual case belongs with a tax adviser.
One point of contact, from start to finish
Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.
That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the Visitor Work Visa for?+
For a clearly defined, short-term assignment paid in Mexico without moving there: a project, an engagement, a time-limited contract. It is deliberately a niche product.
Do I need it to work remotely from Mexico?+
No. If you work for a foreign employer and receive your salary into a foreign account, you do not need a Mexican work permit.
Does the time count towards permanent residence or a passport?+
No. Visitor status is not residence and does not count towards the naturalisation period. If those are your goals, start on the residence track.
Which documents do I need?+
That depends heavily on the type of assignment and who is behind it, and is checked for your case before you apply. Blanket lists would not be honest here.
What if the assignment turns into something more?+
Then we switch to the Work Visa with temporary residence. We carry over the groundwork from your visitor case.
