Mexico Student Visa: The Status for Accompanying Children and Students
When the family moves, every child needs a clean status of their own: the student visa for school and university in Mexico.
Who this procedure suits
In practice the student visa is above all a building block of your family's move: it fits families whose children and teenagers will go to school in Mexico or study there while the parents build up their own residence. Eligibility depends on nationality, and we check it before you order. Together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, we treat it as an application for accompanying dependents, and that is how we present it honestly: as an addition to your residence case, not as a stand-alone relocation product. The larger cities have good international schools, and a German school, the Colegio Alemán, in Mexico City; whether the student visa or residence as a dependent on your own case is the right status for your child, we clarify before you apply.
And who it does not suit:
- ✕You are an adult looking for your own route to Mexico: then temporary residence through proof of solvency or the Work Visa is your product, not student status.
- ✕Your child is to follow the family's residence path long term: whether the student visa or dependent residence fits better has to be clarified beforehand, not afterwards.
- ✕You want tax advantages or a naturalisation shortcut through student status: this status delivers neither.
Requirements
As usual with Mexican residence permits, the application starts at the Mexican consulate before entry. At its centre is proof of the educational purpose: admission to a school or university in Mexico. Which confirmations the institution must provide and which further documents the consulate requires for minors differ from case to case and are checked for your child before you apply. With minors, the parents naturally come into play: the application runs as part of your family's case, not in isolation.
What we take care of
- ✓Clarifying whether the student visa or dependent residence is the right status for your child
- ✓Coordinating with the school or university on which evidence it must provide
- ✓A complete document list for the consulate, with a translation plan where needed
- ✓Preparing and pre-checking every document before the appointment
- ✓Coordinating the consular appointment with the parents' own case
- ✓Support with the steps after entry by licensed local attorneys where the procedure requires it
- ✓Timing in step with the residence procedures of the rest of the family
- ✓One personal contact for the whole family, coordinating everything in English
Step by step
- 1
Clarify the status
We check whether the student visa or dependent residence is the right route for your child.
- 2
Bring in the school
The school or university provides its evidence; we tell it what the consulate wants to see.
- 3
Prepare the documents
Your child's pack is prepared and pre-checked as part of the family's case.
- 4
Consular appointment
The application is made before entry at the Mexican consulate, timed to match the parents' appointments.
- 5
Entry and first day of school
After entry the remaining steps are completed in Mexico, so the start of school does not hang on paperwork.
How long it takes
The consulate and the school or university set the pace; there is no guaranteed date. The most important adjustment is lead time: if you have the start of the school year or semester in view, plan the procedure backwards from that date. That backwards planning is exactly what we take on.
Do you need to be there in person?
The application is made before entry through the consulate; after that, presence follows from the matter itself, because your child attends school or university in Mexico. A presence strategy like the one for Plan B residences does not exist here and is not needed.
Family members coming with you
The student visa is itself a building block of your family's move: it depends on the parents' residence case and is timed with it, so no family member sits with a finished status waiting for the others. Whether the same route or dependent residence, with its lower thresholds, makes more sense for siblings, we check for each child individually; adult students are also assessed properly in advance instead of being squeezed into a scheme designed for minors.
What comes next
Student status carries through the years of school and university. If the family's centre of life is heading permanently to Mexico, it is worth looking at the parents' residence track: temporary residence as the entry point and later permanent residence. What the country offers families, from schools to safety, is assessed honestly in our guide to moving to Mexico.
What is not included
- •Consular and government fees
- •School and tuition fees and services of the school or university
- •Apostilles and legalisations in your home country
- •Certified translations
- •Travel and accommodation costs
- •Tax advice in the destination country
Tax note
A student visa is not a tax matter, but the family's move is. Mexico determines tax residence by your centre of vital interests, not by a 183-day mechanism; what matters is how the parents structure their case. What your home country keeps taxing, and whether a tax treaty with Mexico helps, depends on where you come from. For context, see our guide to residence permits and tax residence in Mexico; your case belongs with a tax adviser.
One point of contact, from start to finish
Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.
That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.
Frequently asked questions
Who is the student visa typically for?+
For accompanying children and teenagers of families who are moving and will go to school in Mexico, and for students. It is a building block of your family's case, not a stand-alone relocation product.
Where do I apply?+
At the Mexican consulate before entry, timed to match the parents' residence procedure.
Is the student visa or dependent residence better for my child?+
That depends on the individual case, including your child's age and the family's plans. That is exactly the decision we clarify before any application is filed.
Are there international schools in Mexico?+
Yes, in the larger cities, including the German school Colegio Alemán Alexander von Humboldt in Mexico City, plus international schools in cities such as Querétaro, Guadalajara and Mérida.
What about adult students?+
For them too, the consular application is the route; we assess their situation individually in advance, because it does not fit every family scheme.
