Colombia Resident Visa (R): How to Apply for Permanent Residency
After the migrant years comes the reward: the R visa as permanent residency, a status that lapses only after more than two years of absence.
Who this procedure suits
The resident visa (R) is the second tier of the Colombian system and suits you if your years in migrant status (M) are already running or you are approaching the threshold. The classic route is five years of unbroken residence on an M visa, whether as a pensionado or an investor. Eligibility can depend on your nationality, and we check it before you order. With the R visa, Colombia becomes predictable: permanent residency frees you from the conditions of your M permit, tolerates absences of up to two years and is the prerequisite for later naturalisation.
And who it does not suit:
- ✕You do not yet have M status: the R visa is the second tier, not the entry point. Your route starts with the right migrant visa, for example as a pensionado or investor.
- ✕Your M residence had gaps: Colombia requires continuity, and interruptions in your status can reset the five-year clock. We review your history honestly before you sink fees into it.
- ✕You expect tax advantages from the R visa: the permit governs your right of residence, not your tax status. Colombia remains a worldwide-income country.
Requirements
The central requirement is your residence history: as a rule five unbroken years in M status. It is evidenced through your movimientos migratorios, the official record of your entries and exits, which we obtain for the application and check against the absence limits before anything is filed. Then come the formalities: a valid passport, your current residence permit, a police certificate and evidence of your means of support, apostilled and officially translated where needed. A Spanish test is not required for any Colombian visa category, including the R visa. The application runs largely online through the Foreign Ministry's portal.
Thinking about a retiree visa, but no pension that moves with you?
Retiree routes require a documented monthly income. For the self-employed and business owners we build a structure for exactly that: the pension plan LLC, your own US company that you fund with a loan and that repays it to you in regular monthly instalments under a documented pension plan. It works for many retiree visas, with no minimum age; we confirm acceptance for your destination before you order.

Passport, police certificate and supporting evidence are apostilled, officially translated and pre-checked by us.
- 3

Together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in Colombia, we file the R application through the Foreign Ministry's portal and represent you in the procedure.
- 4

After approval come registration with Migración Colombia and your new cédula de extranjería, on time.
- 5
Maintain your status, prepare for naturalisation
We track renewals and the two-year absence limit and start naturalisation in good time, if you want it.
How long it takes
The procedure runs largely online and is considered quick by regional standards; there is no guaranteed date. In our experience, most of the time goes into preparation: obtaining the movimientos migratorios, reviewing your history, organising apostilles and translations. After that the R visa is valid for several years and must be renewed regularly; we track the dates for you.
Do you need to be there in person?
With the R visa the presence question relaxes considerably: the status lapses only after more than two years of continuous absence, whereas the M years before it do not tolerate a continuous absence of more than six months. You are not entirely free, though: if you aim for naturalisation, you need continuous domicile in the country, and from 183 days of presence in any rolling 365-day period, tax residence remains the normal case for anyone who really lives here.
Family members coming with you
Every family member goes through the R stage with their own residence history and their own document set. It makes sense to file the family's applications in the same time window, so that status terms and renewal dates stay in sync; we take care of the coordination.
What comes next
With the R visa the final stage begins: after five years of domicile from the issue of the resident visa you can apply for naturalisation. The Colombian passport opens the Schengen area and much of Latin America visa-free, and dual citizenship is allowed. What life in the country is like, you can read on the Colombia country page and in our Colombia reality check.
What is not included
- •Government fees for the visa, registration and cédula in Colombia
- •Apostilles and legalisations in your home country
- •Certified translations
- •Notary fees
- •Travel and accommodation costs
- •The evidence of your means of support itself
- •Tax advice in Colombia
Tax note
Residency is not the same as tax residence: the R visa secures your right of residence, while your tax liability is still decided by the 183-day rule plus your ties. Anyone who lives permanently in Colombia pays tax on worldwide income at progressive rates of up to 39%. Whether a tax treaty between Colombia and your home country helps depends on where you come from:
One point of contact, from start to finish
Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.
That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.
