Renewing Temporary Residency in Costa Rica

Your temporary residency is only worth as much as its unbroken renewal: we keep deadlines, financial evidence and your Caja record together, so the status you are building does not break.

Who this procedure suits

This service suits everyone who already holds temporary residency in Costa Rica, whether as a pensionado, rentista or inversionista, and whose permit is nearing its end. Depending on the category, temporary residencia is initially valid for one to two years and must be renewed regularly, with updated financial evidence each round. If you let the renewal slide, you put your whole status build-up at risk, up to and including later permanent residence; that is exactly what we prevent. To be honest: this is a small, unspectacular procedure, but one that many people handling it themselves have lost their status over.

And who it does not suit:

  • ✕You already have a full three years of temporary residency: then permanent residence is the better next step, not another renewal; we tell you so openly instead of selling you an unnecessary round.
  • ✕Your Caja contributions are in arrears: without up-to-date Caja payments the renewal stalls; we sort that out first, otherwise filing is money wasted.
  • ✕You no longer meet the financial requirements: every renewal asks for updated evidence; in that case we first clarify the right status instead of filing an application with no prospect of success.

Requirements

At the core of the renewal is the updated financial evidence for your programme: the pension evidence for a pensionado, the guaranteed income for a rentista, the continued investment for an inversionista. Then there is the Caja: contributions must be up to date, because anyone who does not pay puts their residence permit at risk, and for rentistas proof of a minimum stay in the country is often required as well. Which documents your category specifically requires and whether in-person appointments are needed, we check for your case before filing, rather than working from a generic list.

Thinking about a retiree visa, but no pension that moves with you?

Retiree routes require a documented monthly income. For the self-employed and business owners we build a structure for exactly that: the pension plan LLC, your own US company that you fund with a loan and that repays it to you in regular monthly instalments under a documented pension plan. It works for many retiree visas, with no minimum age; we confirm acceptance for your destination before you order.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Check status and deadline

We clarify when your residency expires, whether renewal or already permanent residence is due, and what your category requires.

  2. 2

    Update your evidence

Financial evidence, your Caja record and, where needed, proof of stay are compiled and pre-checked by us.

  3. 3

    File the application

Together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in Costa Rica, we file the renewal with the immigration authority; we coordinate any in-person appointments with your travel plans.

  4. 4

    Processing and follow-up

The authority reviews the file, the local attorneys follow up, and we keep you updated in English.

  5. 5

    Confirmation and next deadline

With your residency renewed, we put the next deadline straight into tracking, including the date from which permanent residence becomes possible.

How long it takes

Processing time depends on the authority's workload, and the biggest lever is you: complete, current evidence prevents the rounds of follow-up requests in which self-applicants lose months. Starting early, well before your permit runs out, is what matters, which is why our deadline tracking does not begin only when time gets tight. Here, too, there is no guaranteed date.

Do you need to be there in person?

Whether your renewal needs in-person appointments depends on the category and the individual case; we clarify this before filing and combine any appointments with your travel plans. For rentistas, proof of a minimum stay in the country is often part of the renewal; if Costa Rica is only your second base, you should know this in good time, not at the counter.

Family members coming with you

Dependents hold their own residence permits with their own terms, and every renewal is a separate procedure with its own evidence. We coordinate the whole family's deadlines so that the terms stay as closely in sync as possible and you do not have to renew a different family member every year; the scope per person we clarify in the pre-check.

What comes next

Every clean renewal builds towards the real goal: after three years as a temporary resident you can apply for permanent residence, which is no longer tied to the financial evidence of the temporary programmes. The formal framework is explained in our guide to residency in Costa Rica.

What is not included

  • •Government fees in Costa Rica
  • •Caja contributions and settling any arrears
  • •Apostilles and legalisations in your home country
  • •Certified translations
  • •Travel and accommodation costs
  • •The financial evidence itself
  • •Tax advice in Costa Rica

Tax note

Residency is not the same as tax residence, and renewal does not change that: Costa Rica taxes on a territorial basis and your foreign income stays untaxed. What still decides your position is whether you have left your previous tax residence behind cleanly, and that depends on where you come from:

One point of contact, from start to finish

Your application is filed together with our local partners, licensed attorneys in each country, with whom we have worked for years. We coordinate your case, check your documents and remain your point of contact: in English, throughout.

That applies whether you are still at home or already on the road: one point of contact, no language barrier, no loose ends across four time zones.

Frequently asked questions

Which documents do I need for the renewal?+

The updated financial evidence for your programme, meaning pension evidence, income evidence or proof of your continued investment, plus proof of up-to-date Caja contributions. The specific list depends on your category, and we provide it.

What happens if I have missed Caja contributions?+

Then the renewal stalls, and in the worst case your residence permit is at stake. We check your Caja record before filing and clear any arrears first.

How long is temporary residency valid in the first place?+

Depending on the category, initially one to two years; after that it is renewed regularly, each time with updated evidence.

Do I have to travel to Costa Rica for the renewal?+

That depends on the category and the individual case; we clarify it before filing. For rentistas, a minimum stay in the country is often required for the renewal anyway.

When is permanent residence better than renewal?+

After three years as a temporary resident. From then on permanent residence is usually the better step, and that is exactly what we check before recommending another renewal.

Who files my application?+

Licensed attorneys in Costa Rica, our local partners whom we have worked with for years. We coordinate your case and remain your personal contact in English.
